Aunque sea difícil de creer en Italia no había un idioma oficialmente reconocido en la constitución, fue solo el 2007 que se incorporo como idioma oficial el italiano, aunque la votación del parlamento contó con un 20% de votos en contra. El italiano es el idioma de Italia, la lengua oficial, pero además se hablan lenguas: germánicas, eslavas, griego y albanés, y varios dialectos. De hecho, el 50% de la población alterna el italiano con alguno de los numerosos dialectos. Las minorías lingüísticas están protegidas por la Constitución italiana, además de considerarse lenguas oficiales las siguientes: ladino, alemán, francés, catalán, occitano, idioma franco-provenzal, esloveno, albanés, griego, sardo, y croata. Las lenguas y dialectos que se hablan en Italia son: piamontés, lombardo, ligur, emilio-romañolo, veneciano, friulano, ladino, catalán, toscano, corso, romanesco, napolitano, umbrian, marchigiano, calabrés, siciliano, salentino, sardo, milanés, bergamasco, bresciano, trentino, genovés, mentonasco, monegasco, intemelio, además de 9 dialectos del Emilio-romañolo y 6 variantes del veneciano. De hecho no es raro que los italianos de diversas regiones no entiendan fácilmente a italianos de otras regiones cuando hablan en sus respectivos dialectos
